It's out...
Anyways, I fucking love the game. It's the best looking MMO by far, and the system reqs can attest to it. I don't get that good FPS, but it's playable.
The combat is AWESOME and completely unique. I'll try to explain it. You have three basic attacks, which are just Attack Left, Attack Front and Attack Right. As you get moves however, they usually require you to use the basic attacks to combo and execute the special move. Also, when you fight enemies, they have three arcs around them that can group together to the left, right, or above them. This is their defense. The more arcs around one spot, the higher the defense. Unguarded spots do more damage.
Voice acting is top. There is a lot of conversation in the game and all of it is voice acted, a la EQ2, but better. I was never thrilled at EQ2s voice acting, but AoC is top. A lot of the missions have cut scenes too, which is interesting for an MMO. The quests are a lot of fun, and while they do have some of the standard "Collect 5 Bear Asses", one of my favorite quests so far was that I had to climb a volcano to replace a vial of virgin blood with tainted blood so the gods would get pissed and kill everyone. It was fun as hell.
There are a dozen classes. That's a lot I think. While most of them share some similarity when you start (three classes will go under one archtype: Rogue, Mage, Priest, or Warrior), they branch out quickly. Also, depending on what race you are can determine what class you can play. I'm playing a Barbarian and really enjoy decapitating people.
One big thing about an MMO is the death effect. It's not too big a deal with AoC, even lesser then WoW. If you die, you get a tombstone and you lose some combat ability, but not much. If you get back to your tombstone, you regain it, else it is a half hour buff. When I died, the combat penalty was only -2 to my attack stats, and I was still able to kill stuff without huge effort, and even PvP. It's not a big deal, which is good.
The game does have flaws however, some negligible and some a pain in the ass. The negligible ones have to do with the interface. A lot of it is animated for no reason then being cool, thus killing FPS. I don't know if there is a way to turn it off, so I just live with it. Also, zones with open PvP need to be "avertised" when you enter a bit more. I was unknowingly in one, minding my own and some douchbag came along and tried to gank me. I was like "This is PvP? Ok bitch." Some of the major ones that bugged me as I played were the aggro radius of creatures. Carry a bow. Seriously. I ran into melee so many times trying to "drag" creatures away from other like in WoW and it never worked. When I started using a really crappy bow to pull them away, it was so much better. (Cool fact: When you use a bow, if you listen closely you can hear your character take a breath before they fire.) Respawn times are also a bit off the hook and should be increased. Quest difficulty needs to be better "advertised" as well. I've tried to do a lot of quests, only to find out they are way too hard for me right now.
All in all, I love AoC. The people are pretty damn cool too, minus this one asshole named Virius who hated the starting leveling and was pissing and moaning about it for hours and all he wanted to do was grief, while the rest of the server told him to shut the fuck up. He did go a grief later, and I killed him. Fun times.
