I don't know how soon something else will come up with the size and quality of Stage6. They spent an extreme amount of money on it and it would be hard at first for anybody without having big investments.

I don't understand why Google doesn't start it's own HD video hosting. I mean they definitely have the money.

I'm guessing because it's a huuuuge amount of space and money for movies, there's licensing issues and there will be pirates who will take advantage of the service which means there'll also be lawsuits and such, plus someone or something has to maintain and moderate it constantly.

Google is fucking huge though, stage 6 managed for a long time.

Piracy isn't as hard to stop on video sites as you may think, basically once big enough any time something illegal is uploaded it will be reported within hours. Google definitely has all that is needed to get something going.

Stage 6 actually provides Video groups and forums, and in the One Piece forums there were about 50 of them working together to post all the episodes that the put into the groups and no-one reported them at all

Well between YouTube and Google Videos I think Google is set in the video market. There have also been tons of rumors about the future of YouTube including adding HD support and increasing the file size and adding live streaming. I really don't think they plan to offer movies or TV shows as that would compete against iTunes and Google has a strong and close relationship with Apple. Although YouTube may at some point allow for other videos right now YouTube is suppose to be user-created content, not studio-created so we will see how Google wants to expand it. Right now, YouTube is huge and makes plenty of money, so don't know if Google would want to change anything (besides hd and live streaming). Live Streaming is huge right now (I stream often during the week as well) with UStream (my favorite) and Yahoo! Live (lots of great features) being the top two.

Personally, i never used Stage6.

Stage6 was the main link I found whilst viewing pirated DVD's etc. Maybe that had something to do with it closing down?
